Stand & Deliver

The year is 1725. A roving court arrives to dispense swift justice, led by the notorious “Hanging Judge” Jeffries. Before him stands Spigot, a young farmer accused of highway robbery. With the flamboyant Lord George Georginton prosecuting and the gallows looming, Spigot’s fate hangs in the balance. Is this trial about guilt and innocence, or about class, power, and the machinery of the law? Through testimony, reenactment, and the shadow of execution, Stand and Deliver explores the fractures of 18th-century England: the gulf between rich and poor, the upheaval of the Enclosure Acts, and the question — when survival is at stake, can breaking the law be justified?

Stand and Deliver is a family friendly, immersive theatre piece that encourages the audience to engage in the court proceedings. Is Spigot the violent robber Lord George makes them out to be? Is Lord George really an innocent victim and why is Judge Jeffies talking in a funny voice? We invite the audience to take part in the proceedings — to contemplate law versus justice,
the divide between the wealthy and the poor and, of course, the greatness of potatoes.
